Vienna city guide: itinerary, costs and local tips

One Vienna plan for three to five days, grouped by area: the old centre and the Hofburg, Schönbrunn, the museum quarter and the Belvedere. Days 1–3 are the core trip; days 4 and 5 add the Wachau valley with Melk Abbey and a Heuriger evening among the city's own vineyards. Food is strictly Viennese — Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz, Sachertorte, Apfelstrudel, Kaiserschmarrn — with official 2026 ticket prices and the new 2026 Wiener Linien fares.

Couples and first-time visitors staying three to five days who like palaces, Klimt, classical music and long coffee-house afternoons.

Before you fly

The things worth sorting early

Nothing here is required — it is simply the order most travellers wish they had booked things in.

Best time to visit Vienna

Spring (Apr–May)

Recommended
  • 14–21°C
  • Moderate crowds
  • Normal rates

Palace gardens in bloom.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Peak season
  • 24–28°C
  • High crowds
  • Highest rates

Open-air concerts; busy palaces.

Autumn (Sep–Oct)

Recommended
  • 13–20°C
  • Moderate crowds
  • Good value

Heurigen and new wine season.

Winter (Nov–Mar)

Budget-friendly
  • 1–6°C
  • Low crowds
  • Lowest rates

Christmas markets and ball season.

May, June and September: 18–26°C, the Schönbrunn gardens in full bloom and Heuriger wine taverns open outdoors. Late November and December bring the traditional Christmas markets and the highest hotel prices. January and February are the cheapest and the museums are quiet, but it is cold and dark by 16:30. July and August are hot and the opera and Spanish Riding School take their summer break.

Getting in from the airport

Cheapest.
REX7 regional train from the airport to Wien Hauptbahnhof, about 20 minutes, €5.50 (airport-to-city-boundary ticket plus a Vienna ticket). Until the end of October 2027 the S7 only runs to St. Marx because of works, so take the REX7.
Fastest.
City Airport Train (CAT) non-stop to Wien Mitte in 21 minutes: €14.90 one way, €24.90 return. A taxi is around €40–45.

Where to stay in Vienna

Neubau (7th).
Spittelberg lanes, walk to the museum quarter — around €120–170 a night for two.
Wieden (4th).
Naschmarkt and the Belvedere nearby, good value — around €110–150 a night for two.
Leopoldstadt (2nd).
the Prater and Augarten, one U-Bahn stop from the centre — around €100–140 a night for two.
Innere Stadt (1st).
everything on foot, highest prices — around €180–260 a night for two.

Getting around

2026 Wiener Linien fares: single €3.20 (digital €3.00, valid 80 minutes), 24 hours €10.20 (digital €9.70), 7 days €28.90 (digital €25.20). The old 48- and 72-hour tickets were abolished on 1 January 2026 — for 3 days buy three 24-hour tickets (€30.60), for 5 days the 7-day ticket is cheaper. Trams 1 and 2 circle most of the Ring and double as a city tour.

What to skip

  • Skip the costumed 'Mozart concert' sellers in powdered wigs around Stephansplatz and the Opera — tourist shows at concert-hall prices. Book the Musikverein, Konzerthaus or a Staatsoper standing place directly.
  • Skip unofficial Schönbrunn and Sisi Museum ticket sites — the palace warns of fake websites; real tickets are sold online only at imperialtickets.com.
  • Skip the cafés directly on Stephansplatz and Kärntner Straße; three streets away the same Melange and strudel cost far less.
  • Skip the 'Vienna Pass' unless you will do three or more paid sights every day — this plan is cheaper with individual tickets.

Vienna for couples: romantic spots

Vienna for two is about slow hours: a marble-table coffee house in the afternoon, an opera from the standing room, a glass of Grüner Veltliner among the vineyards at dusk.

The Gloriette at sunset.
Walk up through the Schönbrunn gardens (free) to the colonnade above the palace for the whole city turning gold. The park stays open until dusk.
A Heuriger in Grinzing or Nussdorf.
Family wine taverns on the city's own vineyards: a Brettljause cold platter, Liptauer spread and a quarter-litre of new wine each — about €40–50 for two. Look for the pine branch over the door.
Staatsoper standing room.
435 standing places sold only on the day from 10:00, from €4. Same acoustics as the stalls, with your own subtitle screen.

Dinner at a traditional Beisl in Neubau or Wieden: Wiener Schnitzel or Tafelspitz with apple-horseradish, then Kaiserschmarrn to share — about €70–90 for two with Austrian wine, against €130+ on the Graben.

Seeing Vienna without feeling rushed

Vienna's big sights all run on timed tickets. Fix those slots first, then keep each day on one side of the Ring.

Book Schönbrunn first.
Palace Ticket (€42, about 75 minutes) runs on fixed admission times sold only at imperialtickets.com. Take the earliest slot; tour buses arrive from 10:00.
One area a day.
Day 1 the old centre and Hofburg, day 2 Schönbrunn in the west, day 3 the museum quarter and the Belvedere. No crossing the city twice.
Coffee house = the break.
Plan one long coffee-house stop each afternoon instead of a fourth sight. A Melange and a slice of torte is part of the culture, not lost time.
Day trips get a full day.
The Wachau needs a 08:00 start: train to Melk, boat or bus along the Danube to Dürnstein, back from Krems in the evening.
